3 Communication Mistakes That Are Ruining Your Relationship
By Claudia Lucas Cintado, Health Psychologist

We hear, but we don’t listen
In couples therapy, one of the most common phrases I hear is: “We communicate poorly.” But communication is not just about talking; it’s about making sure the other person receives the message as you intended.
Here are three common pitfalls:
1. The “You Always / You Never” Trap
Absolute words put the other person on the defensive instantly. Instead of saying “You never help at home”, try “I feel overwhelmed with the chores today, could you help me with the kitchen?”.

2. Listening to reply, not to understand
While your partner is speaking, are you actually listening, or are you just preparing your counter-argument? True active listening requires pausing your own internal dialogue.
3. The Silent Treatment
Punishing your partner with silence is a form of emotional manipulation. If you are too angry to talk, it’s healthier to say: “I am too upset right now to have a productive conversation. Give me 30 minutes to calm down, and we will talk.”
Relationships require maintenance. If you feel like you and your partner are speaking different languages, couples therapy provides a neutral, safe space to translate those emotions.
